After featuring Stefan Bucher’s 12 Bigger Monsters Portfolio back in February we received this gorgeous Thank You card from Stefan. So, obviously we had to ask to feature it on FPO as well.
The card took on special meaning last week when Doyald Young — who did the “344 Loves You” lettering — passed away on Monday at the age of 84. Doyald was one of the most magnificent lettering artisans in the industry and a delightful person.
This card is just one more part of his legacy. Embossed on a lovely, textured paper, the lettering is wonderfully rendered with an emboss die of various levels and texture that take it beyond your typical emboss. Do something nice for Stefan and you might get one.
A while back I helped Doyald with some work, and he asked, “Can I pay you for your effort?” Of course, I told him that his money is no good here. So he asked me if he could do something for me in return. I asked if he’d render “344 Loves You” in the style of his classic “Home Sweet Home” lettering. There was a brief silence on the phone. “Can I pay you for your effort?”
But being Doyald he did it, and he did it more beautifully than I could have imagined.
Initially, I thought I’d just get offset cards printed, but I couldn’t figure out how to preserve the beauty and delicacy of Doyald’s large pencil sketch. After a few failed attempts (and with the advent of the necessary funds) I thought, well, why don’t we emboss it? Doyald put me in touch with his old friend Dave Meyer at The Ligature, who made it his personal mission to translate Doyald’s piece into a gorgeous die.
I’m so proud of this card, and I’m looking forward to sending it to people I love for many, many years to come.
