Whenever I make it to Portland next I know exactly what item is on my to-be-packed list, even with no trip in yet in my calendar. A project of passion, love, and determination, this pocket-sized culinary review is both informative and beautiful.

I love to eat, and I love to tell stories, so when friend and independent food writer Jen Stevenson broached the idea of making a dining guide for Portland based on her experiences as an everyday eater, I was in. The project was a labor of love in many ways - for Jen, eating out seven times a day while managing her midsection; for me, working with a pro-bono budget while drawing over 80 spot illustrations. Well, I now know exactly what a brioche looks like.

Written for locals and tourists alike, I particularly enjoyed working with Jen’s exuberant and humorous writing style. To go along with the guidebook we also created a checklist of all 100 places called the Eat Sheet, which readers can download for free at Best Places to Stuff Your Face.

Competing in the realm of self-publishing is tough, and most first time publishers use online print services. But we decided to print the guidebook locally so we could choose the paper stock (non-glossy please!), control the size (pocket-sized please!), and have gatefold maps (you can’t eat if you are lost!). It was more expensive, but definitely worth it.
