Lead Image

This holiday card gets personal. Not only was it penned by one of my all-time favorite teachers, it was printed by a good friend. When I got the email with images and info for this post I was in Mexico and too far away to see the actual piece—which drove me crazy—but my patience was rewarded when I got to play with it.

Project Description

Jon letterpressed this interactive postcard on a thirsty, virginal white sheet. After mailing, it's even filthier and the recipient is invited to continue the process, for an even filthier read. Everything about the card celebrates the human touch, from the manner in which it was produced on press, the textural quality of the paper, the hand-calligraphed address, to the gritty sense of humor with which it was made.

Tools I used to create the original artwork and the hand lettered calligraphy when addressing the back of the postcard: a Pentel Brush Pen, a Nikko G pointed pen nib in an oblique penholder, two inks (walnut and gouache), and metallic accents with a Sakura Clear Star pen.

Production Lesson(s)

Always have fun. ”
