Project Description

Because of the relatively recent media and technology boom, the idea of public figures has changed drastically in terms of how much and in what light we view them. For that reason what we know and what we can know about them has also undergone a huge change. From printed or written words being the only way we could know about a celebrity we now have constant access through multiple media platforms. Not only do we consume vast quantities of information but also get acquainted with the intimate thoughts of people we don’t know. Communication between a celebrity and a fan has altered to suit the emergence of such platforms. Letters are not only a form of communication but have also become precious objects of our history. This book, Evolve or Devolve, decodes the perceived gap that may or may not exist in the way we communicate by reducing original fan letters from yesteryear to 140 characters, the length of a present-day tweet and observes whether the original meaning of the letter changes. All letters have been screen printed and hand bound in an effort to bring back labor and time-intensive methods to the practice of graphic design similar to the process of letter writing.

Production Lesson(s)

Making 64 screens for silkscreen printing was a challenge and I had a deadline of a month to work with. It was an enthralling and thoroughly enjoyable process and binding the entire book by hand was again a new and educational process. Doing an entire project like this by hand was difficult for sure, but the end result made up for it!”
