“The Kulturzentrum St Nikolaus (St. Nikolaus Cultural Center) was built to serve as a meeting place for the inhabitants of Ischgl, one of Austria’s most important tourist destinations. Local bands and clubs meet up there. The Cultural Center connects preserved history with the living present and with its remarkable architectural style it blends perfectly into the alpine surrounding.”

The creative concept we worked out is based on the architecture of the Cultural Center and it's location in the middle of the alps. The building with its striking silhouette and structure, inspired by the alpine surrounding, serves as the basis for the design language. By combining different elements from the defined design language, patterns and forms occur. In this way signs and pictograms develop and appear as consistent elements of the guidance and information system. What has been created is an information system, as well as a corporate design, corresponding to the architectural style of the building. The consistent appearance generates brand recognition and underlines the uniqueness of Ischgl's community and it's Cultural Center.

The logo isn't anything exceptional but what caught my attention about this project was the extended language derived from it and the possibilities to create so many things. There aren't that many applications to see but the bathroom icons alone show the potential of the system. Were this for a bigger cultural center, it would be rife for dozens of application images. Perhaps I'm also drawn to the building itself and its idyllic setting.
