New Logo for Boston 2024 Olympic City Bid

(Est. 2012) “Working to advance the bid to bring the 2024 Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games to Boston, the Boston 2024 Executive Committee comprises local leaders who share a commitment to advance the legacy and continued growth of the city of Boston and the Commonwealth. Spanning public and private sectors, this group is dedicated to the process of advancing Boston’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games, while ensuring that the best long-term interests of our communities and people remain at the forefront.”

This past January, 8, the United States Olympic Committee selected Boston as the United States’ official bid city, over Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington.

I am going to guess this "Beacon" icon is a modern take on a laurel wreath. If I am wrong, then I have no idea what's going on here. I'm mostly confused by what kind of artifact it's supposed to be in the epically epic epic-some video below. It looks like something the Autobots fight over with the Decepticons. As a logo, it does look kind of regal and sporty, but feels like it's lacking any kind of personality. The type is bland but the "4" is pretty.
