Having seen these book jackets in New York Magazine a few days ago, I was happy to see them again in my inbox. I was highly intrigued by them, the illustrations, and the thinking behind them:

The inspiration came from riding the subway to work every day when I would check out other people’s books and (I assumed) they would check out mine. I thought it would be fun/funny to play with that fact that books get seen by others (whether you’re reading them in public or they’re on your bookshelf) by creating book covers that are beautiful/interesting/funny but have nothing to do with any specific book. I think it’s a neat evolution for book cover art and design and a good opportunity for non-book cover designers to work on an unusual surface.

And so it is that with this thought in mind Jeremy Schwartz set out to work creating Book City Jackets. With an array of collaborating artists, each set comes with three book covers as illustrated by three different people. It is up to you to match these to your book of choice as you challenge other commuters to guess what lies beneath.
