Project Description

The purpose of the project was to promote Yorke’s new digital press and focus on its unique use of clear dry ink to produce spot varnish, watermark, flood (as UV coating), and metallic effects – processes not usually associated with printing digitally. Pagliuco Design ‘named’ the press ICE, which stands for Inline Clear Effects, and then used the attributes of actual ice to convey its capabilities, with descriptions like ‘ICE Coats’, ‘ICE Cubes’, ‘ICE Dries’, etc. The swatch book demonstrates how ICE can produce foil-like, tone-on-tone and metallic effects by using different percentages of color and clear ink (i.e. 80% PMS + 80% clear) – or just clear alone - on different stock weights, colors, and finishes.

Production Lesson(s)

Since this is a brand new press with very unique qualities, there had to be a lot of collaboration between designer and printer. The goal in producing the swatch book was to do enough to give designers a taste of what they can now do digitally and get their creative juices flowing. ”
