Project Description

INK is an advertising agency located in Irvine, Ca. The name INK was born from a realization that the single and consistent thread of communication throughout history has been ink. From prehistoric cave paintings to the Gutenberg press, to electronic ink in today's most sophisticated mobile devices - ink has been the vehicle by which stories are told. With INK's collateral I wanted to be simplistic in design but push the boundaries of what we could do with print. Business cards were printed with soft touch coating on one side and uncoated on the other. We also gave the the cards blue printed edges and slightly rounded corners. Through selective contrast of color and texture the card grabs your attention visually and tangibly. These same printing techniques continue forward throughout the collateral including presentation covers, stationery, and notebooks.

Production Lesson(s)

One of our major issues was selecting a stock that would allow us to print uncoated inks on one side and soft coat varnish on the other. Luckily our printer helped us track down a stock that worked perfectly. Another issue we faced was color matching on the edge printing, specifically on the rounded corners. Originally our printer told us, 'People just don't do things like this' which only made me want it more. Through a couple of tests and a grueling color matching session we finally got it. One thing I learned on this project was to never let go of your vision. If you or your printer thinks they can't do something... press on. You might be surprised. ”
