I have a big stack of journals waiting to be used on a shelf behind my desk, but I would not mind adding a couple of these colorful books into the mix to spice things up—craving them like a bowl of sour jelly beans.

Project Description

Six months ago my friend Sam and I started a small design company called Wrapped out of the back of my father's studio. Our idea was to produce high-end, art-inspired wrapping paper. We began with a few designs based on my father's paint splattered worktables and images from his studio and produced our first collection called Venice. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we began, but the incredible feedback and support from our friends, family, and customers has given us the courage to continue growing and creating a body of work we can be proud of. We built the Wrapped journals by hand, one book at a time. Before we laid anything out in a computer, we created 50 prototypes, cut and pasted from just about every printed image we had around. We mixed and matched artwork until we came up with the perfect combination of interior/exterior pairings. Then we photographed the prototypes and prepared the source images in graphic design software for production.

Production Lesson(s)

We learned that the printing industry within the US is alive and well if you're willing to spend time searching our quality manufacturers. When we started this project we were told that it would be physically impossible to produce these journals within the US.  With a lot of hard work and dedication we were able to find a printer and a binder that could produce a beautifully crafted product at a competitive price.”
