The invitations set the mood for a gathering bristling with hands-on, outdoors, classic American fun. The handmade feel of letterpress invitations, the rocky texture of Delicate Arch printed on the front, and an updated take on vintage Americana travel typography establish a tone for a trip full of encounters with nature, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, and playing alfresco.

Project Description

For her 10th wedding anniversary, Soledad wanted something special. The event is taking place over a weekend at a ranch in southern Utah, home of beautiful Arches National Park, so we wanted the invitation to reflect the natural beauty of that landscape. What we arrived at was a literal depiction of Delicate Arch, die-cut out of the front of the card, with the pertinent info on the inside. We printed the rock detail on the front in two warm inks, and used an ecru stock to warm everything up even more.

Production Lesson(s)

Here's where a hand-fed press comes in handy: we decided to die-cut the invitation before printing to obviate any registration issues, since the copy had to line up precisely in the window of the arch. Once the invitations were cut, we fed them by hand through our 1920s Chandler and Price, which turned out to be no problem at all. To register the two type colors, we measured rather than using printers marks, since the cards were already trim-size.”
