Project Description

I self-publish these zines, under the handle Octagon, to have an outlet for personal expression and to experiment with both form and what a reading experience can be. The zines are visual narratives that explore themes related to memory, mortality, myth, and hyperreality. They are culturally critical publications that seek to engage readers in a kind of semiological playground in which meaning is a shared experience between author and reader.

Production Lesson(s)

Zines, which have traditionally been the domain of the photocopier for the low cost, can now be professionally and affordably produced with digital printing. With this project, I enjoy using colorful uncoated papers which are typically used for offset printing (namely French papers) on a digital press. On occasion, I've added additional manually-printed elements, such as the red spot on Issue 1, which was produced with a bingo dauber.”
