Experimenting with duplexing different materials to a toothy white paper, designer Lauren Vajda had to take many things into consideration: Will it bind in the duplex process? Can it withstand the letterpress and take an impression? Can it easily be trimmed? Will ink stay on the material? After much experimentation, Vajda explains, she ended up favoring the tactile papers over the less paper like materials which—in her words—demonstrates “how wonderful paper is”.

Project Description

Studio Twenty Two's collection of furniture and design sensibilities are very much about materials and understated refinement. These became the guiding principals in designing the business cards.

We sought out to create a collection of cards that utilize the same design (and printing plates) but can be altered with different sets of materials over time to introduce new collections or changing trends. In this first collection of cards, we've duplexed 4 materials (an ebony wood veneer, a super glossy Utopia Premium sheet, the plastic/rubbery Plike paper, and an opalescent wall paper-like sheet) to a toothy white stock (Strathmore Writing Cover Bristol Wove) for the card fronts. The backs are foil stamped with the Studio Twenty Two wordmark, while the fronts subtly replicate the wordmark with a blind deboss. We are ever-grateful to Em Letterpress for even attempting this feat.

Production Lesson(s)

I really enjoyed exploring new materials beyond paper, and learning where the limitations are in the printing process are with the alternate materials. Some of these considerations were, for instance, will it bind in the duplex process? Can it withstand the letterpress and take an impression? Can it easily be trimmed? Will ink stay on the material? In the end, we mostly pulled back to very tactile papers because they do all of these things beautifully. It just goes to show how wonderful paper is, and what an incredible selection of stocks are available.”
