Project Description

With only 400 Sumatran Tigers left in the wild, Taronga Zoo needed a concept for Zoofari 2010 that would capture the vulnerability of the Tiger's existence. As the invitation was opened, the 400 Tigers were presented as a collection of gold silhouettes: the invitee literally holding the entire population of wild Sumatran Tigers in their hands. We used gold and black foiling on black card to represent the distinct colouring of the Tiger. An illustrated face of the Sumatran Tiger was used as a motif for the event, printed on invitations, programs and decor. The event raised a total of $430,000 that contributed to the continued protection and conservation of the endangered species.

Production Lesson(s)

This project had several time-consuming tasks: drawing 400 individual tiger silhouettes, hand folding and affixing belly-bands. But it was all worth it for the dramatic and influential story-telling. The invitee firstly tears the belly-band, setting a regal tone. Upon opening, the invitee comes face-to-face with a Tiger, and upon fully opening, the invitee holds every wild Sumatran Tiger on Earth in their hands. Foiling black onto black paper, and printing gold onto gold paper, really highlighted the contrast in textures of the stocks. ”
