Project Description

Herb Lester Associates collaborates with designers and illustrators to produce beautiful (and collectible) printed city guides. I was elated to be asked to do their Party of One: New York guide, which shows you all those great spots to visit when you're unencumbered. My approach was to create a narrative using only objects on the cover, and then to supplement the inside copy with small, humourous people-oriented spots. I borrowed the colour palette from a vintage TWA poster for New York City, which worked well for the content and my particular style.

Production Lesson(s)

This project went through virtually hitch free–except one small one when setting the file up for the printer. It was simply a matter of moving the pretzel down from bleeding off the top edge of the folded guide. The bleed looked great when the cover was viewed alone, but it was weird to see the bit of extra pretzel peeking in from the top edge on the backside of the folded guide. In other words, bleeding into a true edge of a page works, but not to a folded edge, unless there is enough of whatever is being bled to have meaning where it wraps on the other side of the fold.”
