Lead Image

Like an uppercut to the chin, this short-run book by James Gillen delivers a typographic punch with some energetic woodtype typography. Most of the book is typeset in the computer after scanning type specimens from American Wood Type but the cover, contents page, and chapter openers are all typeset in actual wood type and printed on traditional letterpress. That black on black contents page is a knockout. (Ding!).

Project Description

This 116 page book is a conceptual look at the film Raging Bull directed by Martin Scorsese in 1980. It follows the story of Jake LaMotta the former middleweight boxing champion. It focuses on his character flaws that made him such an iconic character.

Production Lesson(s)

Letterpress was used thoughout the book but mianly on the contents and chapter pages, it was hand set the traditional way using a variety of type. Only this process would give the correct gritty feel.”
