Project Description

Twist is a smart LED light bulb that combines adjustable lighting with high-quality audio, via a built-in AirPlay speaker. A new-to-market tech item in pre-order and the first physical touchpoint of the Twist brand, it was important for the packaging to showcase a high-quality, thoughtful experience while feeling exciting for the consumer.

We began by concepting an unveiling experience that would heroize the product and expand the core elements into a unique brand expression. Collaborating with the team at Forma, our structural design partner on the project, we created a box design that slides open to double its original footprint, creating a presence when opening unique to Twist. We focused on this structure and the product itself, streamlining the design to highlight the brand's color story and elevated design details. We utilized the purple hues of the Twist color palette in a two-tone design; we added in spot varnish moments to highlight design elements, like the logos, text, and illustration. We opted for a die-cut EVA foam in a dark hue to protect the product and create a focal point for the bulb, contrasting with the white material.

Production Lesson(s)

Throughout the entire process, we were focused on a high-level of execution for the final product. Always budgeting more time for sampling and revisions is vital to having a great end product, especially when working through materials and color. As an example, we loved the look and feel of soft-touch paper, but when we explored it we realized it wasn't a great solution for a box of the size and weight we had—€”it showed wear much easier than we wanted it to. We worked to find a similar solution—€”a matte laminated sheet—€”that gave us the texture and look we wanted, saving on cost. ”
