While the interior of the book is pretty straightforward with the use of a single ink for the five scripts and a handful of images, it is the cover that really pulls you in. The subtle changes on the holographic paper created with UV ink create a fascinating tonal change that speaks to the struggles faced by the authors.

Project Description

In celebration of The Necessary Stage’€˜s 30th anniversary, the theatre company has put together a collection of five LGBT plays written by Haresh Sharma, its resident playwright. The book meticulously documents the production information and playwright’s notes for the staging of each play with the script.

Apart from incorporating the representative symbol of the rainbow for the LGBT community in a subtle manner, the holographic paper also attempts to express how LGBT people struggle to present themselves within acceptable societal and gender norms daily so as to fit in. There is also a deliberate mix of serif and san-serif typefaces in the typesetting of the text. It is to reflect the archaic perception of homosexuality that pervades the seemingly progressive times we live in.

Production Lesson(s)

We learnt that only specialized printing methods, like UV ink, could work on the holographic paper we used on the cover. There were many experiments to ensure that the design turned out right, but the end result made it all worth the while! ”
