Project Description

The book is about the living descendants of the great Hungarian poet, Sandor Petofi. It documents the vast amount of research the author did, ranging from interviews, archive photographs to detailed family trees.

The book is divided between two families (the poet's mother's and father's branch). These are marked in the middle of the spreads with the page numbers. Each chapter starts with a fictional writing of the poet, as if he was commenting on his descendants. To show the relationships, family trees were drawn and placed on fold-out pages.

The black and yellow color scheme is a reference to complementing the previous book Secrets of the Barguzin Skeleton of the author, which was designed in black and blue and was about an expedition finding the poet's skeleton.

Production Lesson(s)

We worked back and forth with the family tree illustrations while talking to the printer to figure out a way to be able to have fold-out pages while fitting into the budget. We wanted to be able to produce the book with machine folding and assembly to keep the costs low. This restricted the flexibility of placing the fold-out pages wherever we wanted to have them in the first place.

Working with the author and the printer, we managed to edit the sections (by adding and removing pictures and additional paragraphs) and create a long enough fold to accommodate the wide family trees.”
