When printing anything registration is always a concern. When dealing with letterpress and multiple colors that is a big red flag, a flag that seems to have been embraced by the design of this poster and its production that left no room for error.

Project Description

Creating images with typographic modular systems is something that fascinates us very much, ever since finding out crazy examples of this technique in old specimens and catalogues.

To bring these references to the modern day it seemed natural to us to reference the modular system we have under our eyes every day: the pixel grid.

We partnered with the undiscussed leaders in “low-res”€ images and founders of the pixel-art technique: illustrators and artists eBoy, that designed expressly for us an illustration of our printshop in their signature isometric landscape style. We ended up agreeing on a double 46x56 cm poster in 5 colors, for a size of 120x200 actual pixels and a resolution of 25 dpi.

Once the production of the posters was over we also took the liberty to print with the biggest and most incredible machine we have the chance to use: a 70x100 Koenig & Bauer from around 1890 that works with an epicyclic gearing, to print the folder we ship the posters in.

Production Lesson(s)

The composing process was quite complex but mostly just long and meticulous. The true challenge was keeping a perfect registration throughout five runs for each poster. With such an inusual composition even closing the lockup in the press is a delicate operation, that can influence the printing registration.”
