Letterpress, risograph, glue, folding, belly band… multiple parts and processes make up this unique publication that is partly made by machines and partly put together by humans. A vision, some experimentation, and hard work deliver a subdued and exquisite-looking publication.

Project Description

POSSIBLES merges art and civic engagement in the perspective of sustainable community development. Once a month throughout the year 2017, POSSIBLES will present the works of 12 artists from various art disciplines in collaboration with 12 creative partnerships in 12 unusual Montreal venues.

The 4th POSSIBLES project, presented in April, revolves around literature, with a short story by writer Maude Nepveu-Villeneuve and a poem by Shawn Cotton. Our job was to imagine the publication which would contain both texts. “The act of writing opens up infinite possibilities for the construction of new worlds and new interpretations. Starting from universal or specific themes, the writer creates objects to be randomly thrown out there for future interactions with readers. Love and death, youth and nostalgia, universality and utopia; there are as many interpretations as there are readers. The spectacle, however grandiose it appears, is solitary and intimate. With the Objets Flottants project, Maude Nepveu-Villeneuve and Shawn Cotton extrapolate on the theme of health and quality of life by being inspired by questions which surround the access to the river and offer singular visions of a living Montreal”. In that regard, we created a unique publication for both of them, the first one inspired by the ship containers depicted in the short story, including the addition of five original photos printed on a risograph in 4 colors, the second one inspired by textures and matter and a sense of grandeur, hence the publication deploys in space. Both publications are reunited with a paper band which masks the covers, that are revealed later on.

Production Lesson(s)

For Shawn Cotton's publication, we had to glue three sheets of paper together (we couldn't print on a bigger sheet instead, since we were limited in size by our risograph). We had to test different glues in order to find he right one to use, as well as develop the better technique to put on the glue without damaging the papers and the folds. Once that was done, the project went quite smoothly, even though 500 books and 500 booklets is quite a big printing job for our artisanal studio! ”
