Mama's Sauce

A creative exercise that was not meant to live on as a printed piece was carefully studied and adapted to become one. And we sure are happy to see that this happened, for the beautiful letters come to life trough ink—ink on paper and ink on ink.

Project Description

This is a print of my complete series for the 4th edition of 36 Days of Type. I chose three colors and began to experiment each day with different techniques. Not only was this project a lot of fun, but I was also able to produce a cohesive character set while pushing myself creatively.

36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators, and graphic artists to express their particular view on letters and numbers of our alphabet. 36 days of restless creativity, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day, resulting in the representation of the same symbol from many different perspectives. It's a project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities.

Production Lesson(s)

When these were initially designed, I did not do so with the intent to create a printed piece. Adapting the design to silkscreen proved to be a challenge, but Mama's Sauce worked with me for several weeks to get the best results. The goal was to sacrifice as little of the design aspects as possible while not pushing the limits of silkscreen too far so as to make something that just wouldn't work. Paper stretch, gradient transitions, and achieving a multiply effect were all very difficult obstacles that we were able to work through. In the end, the piece came out beautifully but not without its headaches! ”
