What happens when you merge a book and a magazine, you add a lot of passion, you remove templates and grids, you provide 190 blank pages (150 for the magazine + 40 for the book) and license for customization? In a way that is what Wooden Toy encompasses.

The purpose of each edition of Wooden Toy is to profile some of the world’s most progressive emerging and established creative artists. Each edition is themed and with edition 7 being the MUSIC edition it featured around the lives of band poster artists, music-inspired design and art, band interviews and music photographers.

For this edition a custom Toybox package was created to house the publication along with additional inserts including one 40-page A5 Lyrics and Type zine, an artist’s print and a certificte of authenticity.

The real magic however is in the design and layout of Wooden Toy and with over 1,000 hours poured into the latest edition, Wooden Toy has become possibly the most heavily designed magazine in the world. Each page is individually crafted from scratch using no templates, consistent fonts or typesetting. Each spread is completely unique and individual to the content being featured throughout from cover to cover. It is an intense display of detail and craftsmanship with pages and pages of hand drawn type, illustrations and raw photography.

The biggest challenge was sourcing extra illustrators on a very small design budget. The solution was finding illustrators that were passionate about collaborating with Wooden Toy and eager to help out. Something I learnt was there are many people out there willing to lend a hand on a good project if only you ask.
