Based out of Brooklyn, Ugly Duckling Presse is a non-profit art & publishing organization who seem to have real zeal for helping spread delicious mindfood. I was in Marfa, TX this past weekend, and the Marfa Book Co. had some of their poetry books for sale. If you get a chance, take a look, and if you have the money, help em’ out by buying some really neat work.
Rachel’s website is really spectacular as well.
Ugly Duckling Presse is an organization with a strong and widely admired aesthetic. The conceptual challenge for this piece was to share a bold and clear vision for the catalogue, while still consistent with UDP’s look. This was done through multiple small design decisions, and discussed in detail with UDP staff. The result is something that looks like nothing else that UDP has done, and yet fits perfectly into their aesthetic. As each page in the catalog contains different types of information (excerpt, quote, bio, about the book, etc.), it was also important to create a layout that will display all the information in a way that will make it easy for the reader to navigate through.
I learned that with newsprint, banding can not be avoided when doing full bleeds (although it did lend the catalog certain authenticity). I also wish I had known about trapping as some registration issues did occur.
