A specialty of New North Press, this letterpressed poster of an English nursery rhyme brings a childlike feel to hand-set type. The grim subject matter of the poem prods one to ponder the context of its origin—or at least Google it. A variety of typefaces provide the rhythm of the rhyme. I’ve never heard it spoken before, yet it’s still stuck in my head.
Oranges and Lemons is an English nursery rhyme which refers to the bells of six churches, all within or close to the City of London and dates from around the 17th-century.
The type was printed on a hand-pulled Albion press in two halves as it was too large to fit on the bed all in one go. This doubled the print and drying time and also meant we had to roll the excess of the sheet to wind in the press. As this was a second edition we should have recalled these trials.
