Dandini Comes Clean — Paintings by Robert McLeod was designed to be used. Machine-creased, dog earred pages and a secret sketchbook insert encourage the reader to engage the book, not just leave it on the coffee table. McLeod’s surreal, dimensional paintings are effortlessly balanced with clean, contained typography to accentuate a flowing experience.
Robert McLeod asked the PAULNACHE Gallery and me to design his new book. Robert had designed his last book himself and while the end result was good, as an artist he didn’t want to go through that process again.
His requirements were to include his sketchbook somewhere, so we pitched the idea of die-cutting a hole through the middle of the book and letting the inserted sketchbook nestle in, like a bottle of whisky in a bible. He liked the idea, so I had to discuss with my very open-minded printers (not at first, mind…) how they would go about doing this. Turned out to be easier than I thought, it just needed to fall into the 4-16 page signatures of the book. They die-cut the 16-page signature then bound it in with the rest.
Robert had also mentioned he didn’t want a traditional ‘coffee table’ art book, he wanted more of a dog-eared, rough thing that would see a lot of use - so we incorporated dog ears in as section markers. They were machine-creased and hand-folded by some lucky employees.
