For these limited edition postcards six designers/illustrators were invited to express their relationship with the gastronomic universe. Continuity between the cards comes from the subject and the two-color palette—which not only provided continuity between the diverse designs, but also allowed for efficiency in the printing process.

Project Description

Carimbo Letterpress, print shop in Brazil, teamed up with graphic designer Andrea Kulpas to create Bolandeira, a limited edition collection of letterpress printed postcards.

We invited 6 illustrators to take part in this project: Bia Bittencourt, Crystian Cruz, Janara Lopes, Marcus Penna, Rodrigo Grimer and Thiago Reginato. They were asked to elaborate on the food theme and work with two colours: orange and rubine red. Each one developed a unique artwork to be letterpress printed on a Heidelberg Windmill.

The result is a edition of 80 kits and each one comes with 6 different letterpress postcards, signed by each artist, along with a numbered certificate, all packed inside a traditional Brazilian lunch box and wrapped up in a silkscreened dishtowel.

Production Lesson(s)

Having all 6 different artworks with the same colours provided a sense of unity for the collection, along with the common food theme. But more important, it helped on the production side as the press did not have to be completely adjusted or washed up each time a new illustration had to be printed.

We streamlined this process by printing all the orange plates on one day and following with the second colour on the next day.”
