This thesis project experiments with George Perec’s “A Man Asleep” through multiple modes of interpretation—typography, layout, editing, production, etc. The original second-person novel is divided into three parts, which are each represented by one of three books in the set. For Cristina Myung Sun Gu each design decision provided another angle for interpreting and relaying the story.

Project Description

A poetic and inter-semiotic translation of George Perec's book, "Un Homme Qui Dort" [1967], through the editing and reorganization of texts from his original work. The pieces were conceived in three parts as artist's books [book objects] in a black box—"Homem Ostra" [Oyster Man], "Multidão" [Multitude] and "Percursos" [Pathways]—in order to explore the relationship between the city and the contemporary man in different levels of confection, narrative and design techniques.

Production Lesson(s)

Developing products that relate to the literary piece, graphic solutions and different printing techniques for each stage, resulted in numerous setbacks between suppliers and materials used.”
