Every year when fall turns to winter tightly cropped images of snowflakes’ crystalline details surface as photographers around the world document tiny details to prove the old saying: “No two snowflakes are alike.” These holiday gift coasters were inspired by Margaret Kimball’s fascination with macro photos of snowflakes. The original artwork for each snowflake (and letter) is uniquely hand drawn based off of these super-up-close photos.

Project Description

Every winter, I sort of obsess over macro photographs of snowflakes. This year, I wanted to draw some. Then, when thinking about what to send around to friends, family, and clients during the holidays, I decided to have the snowflake illustrations silkscreened onto coasters. I hand-lettered a mailer, illustrated a postcard, designed a custom envelope, and sent the packages in the mail.

Production Lesson(s)

There was originally a yellow coaster, too, but when we tried to ink the edges, the coasters all stuck together. We had to reconsider the method of inking the edges.”
