Lead Image

Taking DIY to a higher level, Andy set out to design and produce his own identity materials when he started his solo practice. He did not let letterpressing, duplexing, silkscreening, collating, or any other of the many steps involved in his full kit of materials get the best of him—he surely made the best use of his resources.

Project Description

As I made the jump to full-time freelancing, I knew it was important for me to take an honest look at who I am and what I offer —” and figure out how I can better express that. I wanted my personal identity system to showcase my range skills and interests —€” my passion for ideas and strategies, my love of design and aesthetics, and my dedication to craft. I designed and produced all of the materials myself —€” duplexing paper by hand, letterpress printing business cards, screen printing t-shirts, binding sketchbooks from make-ready posters, and also coding my web site. It was a hell of a lot of work, but seeing it all together, it does feel like a good summation of the last few years of my life.

Production Lesson(s)

So many things! But for starters: (1) you can duplex your own paper with some book binding glue, a hand brayer, and a little patience; (2) If you want to get a deep bite on a letterpress, pull back your ink levels or your type will get smushy; (3) Silkscreening white ink on dark paper is way harder than dark ink on white paper. ”
