When people visit universities, colleges or local chapters of an organization a poster is often put together announcing the speaker. Jude Landry was the man behind the poster that Mississippi State University produced when Jessica Hische visited last winter.
When we invited Jessica Hische to do a lecture and lettering demo last year at Mississippi State University, I wanted to design a striking poster that would encourage students from all over campus to hear her speak. She had recently begun her Daily Drop Cap Project, and I thought a custom, ornamented J would be a solid concept for the poster. I had been playing with drawing letters in Illustrator using thin lines on a grid, and this style grew out of that experimentation. The whole thing is actually very simple, it uses arcs from circles and straight lines. The ball and dot of the J are actually very tight spirals, not concentric circles. We didn’t have a large budget for promotions, so I kept it to 1-color, and knew that printing silver on brown would make it more luxurious than a typical spot color on white paper.
And if you love the poster as much as we do, then you are in luck. You can purchase your own copy for $25.

Many students thought that Jessica had drawn the J on the poster, but I assure you, it was me! When I showed it to her she loved it, and she kept 10 copies for herself. I’ve attached a photo she took of her new studio space in New York, with the poster hanging near her workspace.
