Project Description

"Be Prepared" sent our contributors on their way with one word as a loose token of inspiration: “SURVIVAL.”

The written words in this issue were prepared a little different than usual. Our writers were given preliminary sketches, rough concepts and illegible notes from our contributing illustrators. They concepted their stories in unison with their assigned collaborators—dueling artists, refining a work together until the final pieces were complete. What we’re left with are stories accompanied by illustration and yet inspired first by illustration.

For a limited time, each FQ No.3 issue will be shipped with a merit patch and a "Scout Laws" poster designed by Dan Christofferson, Dan Cassaro and Nate Utesch.

Production Lesson(s)

Third time's a charm! After a failed Kickstarter campaign, we took a breath and plotted this issue very carefully. We had to be incredibly budget conscious and yet wanted to come back better than ever after issues one and two. We scouted book stores across the country who would carry us. We met with the printer on ways to "eliminate waste" and yet not cut corners on quality and craftsmanship. And we curated this issue from a mind-melting short list of incredible artists and writers and almost one thousand submission inquiries since issue two. We certainly haven't "made it" in this world of ebooks and pixel-perfect web galleries—but we're proud. And we feel loved non-the-less.”
