12 — Fontsmith Silas Type Specimen

Type specimens are cool to begin but the multiiple sheet sizes and different stocks really helped sell Fontsmith’s Silas type family.

11 — “The Constitution of Moiré” Posters

Moiré patterns can be an unfortunate result of bad printing (or poor designing and file prepping) but when done on purpose and at large scale they are trippy and awesome.

9 — The McQuades Business Cards

Black-on-black debossing/embossing is always a welcome approach and, in this case, the effect pays off with an “M” logo that works symmetrically to look excellent on both sides of the paper.

The group of illustrators in this project all put the two colors hard at work to generate a third color in this great poster series.

7 — Salões de Paris Book Cover

I love elaborate foil stamp pieces and this cover delivers on that while rocking a great layering effect by first printing white on the cover and the piling on the gold. Also, gold edging on the pages is hot.

6 — “Museum – A House for Learning” Book

Even hotter than the gold edging on the project above is fluo orange edging! This book literally radiates. The beautiful debossed pattern on the cover and great interiors make it the complete package.

2 — The World’s Smallest Portfolio

Besides being awesome for its tiny-ness I love that Michael used to his advantage the graininess in small type when printing on an inkjet to create a unique texture. Plus: the binding is totes adorbs.

1 — Initialising Christmas.exe Postcard

Of all the 24 projects selected as Best Of this year this is probably the least tricked out and most straightforward, which proves that sometimes it’s all about a strong idea executed well. Printed on a blue stock to mimic the jarring blue screen of MS-DOS, the monospace font is neatly laid out and printed in white foil stamp for a dash of Christmas spirit. It’s smart, simple, and flawless.
