Project Description

Taman Jurong: Our Heritage Our Home is a series of publications co-commissioned by the National Heritage Board and Community Development Council of Singapore.

Book One features 14 heartfelt interviews with individuals living through the times of what started off as a migrant and industrial zone which many second and third generation Singaporeans call home today.

With stories carrying raw emotions and loving memories, the book was produced with the title copper stamped on raw chipboard, signifying the old saying "You sometimes find gold in the most unlikely places"

Production Lesson(s)

One thing we needed to do was to show the rawness of the personal while accentuating the beauty of a printed book. A chipboard cover was decided with copper foil stamping to reflect this concept. I was comfortable with doing exposed stitch but due to cost issues, a lot of work was put into rearranging the already laid out pages to have a certain number of 1c x 1c pages so that we can save on that part. That took a toll on the flow of the stories and editorial design. It was ultimately resolved with a lot of restructuring of content without losing the soul and essence of the personal accounts.”
