Project Description

We collaborated with illustrator Kristen Drozdowski of Worthwhile Paper on this limited edition notebook, which kicks off a new tree planting initiative. We worked with the National Forest Foundation to plant one tree for each notebook that we made!

Kristen created the illustration, and we worked together to choose the ink colors, interior page style, and staple colors. The notebooks were produced in our shop in Portland, OR, where we offset print everything in-house using vegetable-based inks and recycled materials. All our equipment runs on renewable energy. Kristen is committed to using sustainable practices and materials for her line as well, so the collaboration was a great fit!

You can learn more about this project and read some interview questions with Kristen here.

Production Lesson(s)

Working with rasterized images means no trapping, which meant we had to be extra careful when registering the different colors. Additionally, white ink is always a bit tricky on our chipboard stock, since offset ink is semitransparent. We really wanted it to pop here, so our press operator took extra care to clean the press and adjust the flow of ink so that we had maximum coverage.

We also learned that clear communication, and working with a like-minded collaborator, makes the process very smooth and easy.”
