Exploring novel approaches to traditional techniques, the 8 artists featured in the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art’s trans/FORM all use low-tech methods to reveal meaning through medium. Utilizing a similar mixing and matching of processes, designer Emma Wright juxtaposes muted one color pages with bright white, CMYK ones to create a dichotomy that emphasizes texture and materiality.

Project Description

The 8 participating artists are known for their exploration of new approaches in art making, while using traditional means (painting, sculpture etc.) in lo-tech ways that also reveal meaning through the materiality of the works. The texture and materiality in the work was a big inspiration for the production and design. Alternating papers and printing processes reveal the make up and construction of the book, much like the works shown utilize multiple processes and materials. A load of thumbnails and spaced out letters on opening pages both follow and reveal the grid used in the design.

Production Lesson(s)

Working with a printer that has suggestions and will accommodate loads of quote requests is key. ”
